When I was growing up in San Juan del Sur Nicaragua my older brother had a farm in the countryside that I would visit on the weekends with my family.
On the farm there were caretakers and one of the things I remember most is that upon arriving at the farm I would smell burning coffee.I never understood why they did this until many years later when I was in Strasbourg, France, and I noticed that at a restaurant we passed they were also burning coffee in the outdoor seating area.

I learned that this is a natural and effective way to keep away wasps and mosquitoes without using harsh chemicals.
